At last, something New!

Nothing like a motorbike accident to put a serious dent in developments!
Just before COVID  so that was a disaster as well.
4 years to full recovery but now there’s  an awesome new project somewhat further afield, an ‘Old Fashioned Farm Stay Experience’ near Harrismith in the most stunning surrounds with a little ‘Shak Style’ influence to make the experience memorable! so here goes –

                                      MAWENI HEIGHTS FARM
“An Old Fashioned Farm Stay Experience”

Welcome to Maweni Heights Farm, a historical gem nestled 35 km from Harrismith and a stone’s throw from Sterkfontein Dam. The farm comprises a flat topped mountain with a thousand acres on the top, surrounded by  dramatic 100m cliffs. The south side of the mountain is near the KZN border and the north side slopes down from the cliffs to a vlei with a profusion of scenic rocks studding the hillside.

Owned by the Van Den Bosch family since 1875, the farm preserves its heritage with the original main house and equipment.
It’s a historical treasure trove, offering a glimpse into an old way of life which seems particularly appealing in this fast-paced day and age.

Activities
It’s a hikers and rock climber’s paradise! For adventurers, the mountain is a haven of untouched rock faces, perfect for ‘trad climbers’ seeking uncharted challenges or shorter free climbs on large boulders. If relaxation is more your style, enjoy long hikes, scenic walks or gentle scrambles that are suited to all ages.

Digital Detox
The mountain has a special energy which makes it ideal for wellness retreats, where you can chill and rejuvenate.
The network here is inconsistent at best and we wholeheartedly advise a phones off experience. There is however a sunny spot on the front stoep where, if one had to, an email or whatsapp can be sent!
Once the busy world is forgotten, you can enjoy our 15 different hiking trails with caves, grottos, San paintings, tree fossils and viewpoints to forever.
For the less energetic there are lots of other activities and games to keep you busy, that is if a total state of sloth doesn’t overtake you first!
Otherwise picnics, braais, naps, birding, reading, writing, sketching and leisurely sundowners are the order of the day.
Whether you seek adventure or tranquility, Maweni Heights Farm promises an unforgettable retreat.

The Rooms
The accommodation is 4 rooms (3 doubles and a family room that sleeps 5) in the main house,
and 3 outside rooms (2 doubles and a triple with a shared loo) a rondavel (double) and a freestanding stone room (double). The last two share the general ablutions.

Where’s the loo?
Our ablutions reflect the simplicity of yesteryear. You’ll find one ensuite bathroom and a communal bathroom in the main house, as well as a shared toilet in the outside rooms.
Long ago, wash stands with basin baths were the preferred choice, and for those who wish to indulge in this vintage experience, a wash basin bath is quite an experience! (Guidelines provided!)

What’s Cooking?
Our kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable self-catered stay, however, there is an old ( Mrs Sam 10 wood-fired stove) if you want to go the full authentic route as you immerse yourself in farmhouse charm as you cook and unwind, preferably with a sherry in hand!
We encourage self-catering, but if you prefer a culinary adventure, we can arrange for delightful Indian cuisine from Harrismith, or themed meals (Shisanyama done different, Mexican or Thai) prepared on site.
(You may remember us from Legends, Gringos in Durban, and the Prawn Shak although we need some coaxing to recreate the old favourites!)
Menus and prices on request.
